Policy for reader commentary on washtenawvoice.com and social media accounts
The Washtenaw Voice welcomes and appreciates a free, open and civil exchange of ideas, information and opinions on its news website and social media.
We ask that anyone posting comments to stories, or in reaction to other comments, to adhere to these guidelines:
- Keep it clean: This is a public forum, open to civilized people who do not appreciate obscene, vulgar or sexually oriented language.
- Keep it civil: Don’t degrade, threaten, abuse or invade the privacy of other readers of the subjects of stories.
- Keep it truthful and legal: Don’t lie, impersonate another individual or post comments that advocate illegal activity.
- Stay on topic: Focus on the subject at hand. Do not post advertisements or solicitations for funds, goods or services.
- Be responsible: Comments are the sole responsibility of those who post them.
- Share your knowledge: Give us your eyewitness accounts, background and observations. If you see an error in a story or think there are issues we should follow up on, please email us at thewashtenawvoice@gmail.com
Washtenaw Voice staff may, but is not obligated to, review comments posted and reserves the right to remove any comment for any reason. Users are encouraged to notify thewashtenawvoice@gmail.com if they discover a comment violates these rules. By submitting a comment, the user agrees to allow The Washtenaw Voice to print the username and comment in the newspaper and elsewhere.
The user understands that a violation of comment rules can result in the suspension of the user’s access to post comments to the site, and could be subject to further investigation.

Letters and guest columns
The Voice welcomes letters from readers. Letters should be a maximum of 200 words and include the author’s name. A phone number and email address are required so letters can be verified before publication. That contact information will not be published.

Advertising
The Voice makes all reasonable efforts to sell advertising space to businesses and other organizations relevant to its readers.
- The Voice reserves the right to refuse or reject any ad and declines to sell ads for products that cannot be used on campus, alcohol and tobacco, for example.
- The Voice considers the welfare of members of the campus community in making decisions about advertising requests.
- The words “paid advertisement” may be placed over or below any advertisement.
- The Voice will not knowingly run any ad that is fraudulent, libelous, or in violation of any local, state or federal law.
- The Voice does not endorse the content of any advertisements.
