I’m a retired college teacher who realizes the future belongs to the younger generation.
My husband was born in Detroit. Our family returns to Lake Superior most summers, where his Dad bought a cabin in 1937. During my delightful summer in Ann Arbor, I cycled way out of Washtenaw to give blood at the Red Cross Office.
I was still determining whether or not I would have the pep to cycle back home on a hot afternoon. I did. Although I live in California, Michigan is in my heart.
I encourage student activists to ring doorbells. While each of us will find our pitch, mine is “May I tell you why I am voting for ___________?”
As for students who have yet to register, Gov. Whitmer has put Michigan in national leadership for easy voting.
Students can register at either their campus address or their permanent home address, even if they’re an out-of-state student attending school in Michigan. Like every voter, students can only cast one ballot per election.
Michigan law allows same-day voter registration, meaning that eligible citizens can register and vote up to and on Election Day. Voters may register or update their voter registration in person at their city or township clerk’s office through 8 p.m. on Election Day. Citizens must bring proof of residency to their clerk’s office if attempting to register on Election Day.
