WCC’s new Engineering Club meets every Thursday in Room LA225 and will host its first event on March 23. While the club’s mission is to give academic students a chance to work hands-on, the event is not just for current members – or even those with engineering experience.
Nationwide, the United States needs “new, younger engineers, [because] the older engineers are moving out and retiring,” said Mark Nitkiewicz, the Engineering Club’s president and founder. “We’re trying to get some publicity out there,” not just for the club, which was created at this semester’s beginning, but for the entire engineering field.
Club leaders and members will teach new participants the basics in an hour-long crash course. Once everyone is on the same page, event attendees can build collaboratively, such as writing computer code on Arduino software and working with servo and joystick circuits. Somewhere in the middle of these activities, everyone can take a break, hanging out together and eating pizza.
