Washtenaw Community College will recognize its student veterans with a series of events on Veterans Day, November 11th.
Rachel Barsch, supervisor of student activities, said that a flag raising will be held outside the Student Center at 7 AM. Then at 10:30 AM, the main ceremony will be held in the atrium on the second floor of the Student Center.
Barsch said the main ceremony will be a blend of in-person and virtual. A Zoom meeting will be provided for those who wish to attend virtually.
The ceremony will feature remarks by WCC Associate Vice President Brandon Tucker, student veterans Carter Hower and Thomas Harris Jr., and remarks by President Rose Bellanca.
Tucker, who served in the Air Force National Guard for six years, said that the ceremony recognizes the employees and students who have given their service.
“They may be in the vet center, but they may be in the classroom…,” Tucker said. “You may never know that they were a veteran.”
Barsch mentioned that this year’s ceremony will include the presentation of a flag flown over Iraq, which is being dedicated to the Wadhams Veteran Center.
Carol Osborne, military and veteran coordinator at WCC, said the flag was flown by her son, a pilot in the Army National Guard who was deployed to Iraq.
“I’m proud of his service to our country and he’s proud of WCC and the work we do here in the center and for what we offer here to our veterans,” Osborne said. “He wanted to show his appreciation and let the veterans here at home know they are remembered and thought of by fellow soldiers, veterans serving deployments abroad.”
