The WCC Board of Trustees discussed the recommendation of two cybersecurity certificates, two health science programs and one art program at their monthly meeting on Feb 23.
The trustees also discussed the discontinuation of two programs: a Linux/Unix Systems certificate and a Principles of Cybersecurity certificate.
According to Kim Hurns, Executive Vice President of Instruction & Academic Affairs, three of the new programs, Supply Chain Essentials, Principles of Cybersecurity, and Cybersecurity Advanced Operations have industry-level certifications built into the courses.
“For many of our students, that resume they build from a degree standpoint, as well as a certification from industry, is extremely important,” said Hurns.
The two additions to the health science department include a Cardiac Telemetry Technician certificate and Health Administration Associate in Science program. Both programs are in response to what jobs are growing in that industry, according to Hurns.
A recommendation was also made for an Arts Management certificate, which classes will focus on business, management, and entrepreneurship opportunities in the arts industry.
As the programs are collaborative efforts between several WCC departments, existing faculty members will be teaching the new courses. There are no plans for new staff to be hired.
“They are making better use of the courses we are already offering,” said Hurns. “In many cases, they are bringing together a collection of courses and developing new ones. We do have faculty developing those and they are taking the lead on that so far.”
The programs will be available to students in the Fall 2021 course catalog.
