Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article mis-stated the application deadline. It is March 2.

Funding college can be a challenge. No one wants a large debt upon graduation.

The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF) offers college scholarships, and you just might be eligible. Applicants do not have to be graduating high school seniors or honor students.
Applications are being accepted for Fall 2021; the deadline is March 2 at 3 p.m. AAACF’s focus is to support the community we live in and share.

Community Investment Officer, Maryellen Ferro, pointed out scholarships for Washtenaw Community College students. The following information was taken from AAACF’s website: “The Morris B. Baker Scholarship offers over 20 students $3,000. For those who attend Cleary University or WCC. A student must be a permanent resident of Washtenaw County, enrolled in nine credit hours, and have a min. GPA 2.0.

The Richard D. & Grave P. Leslie Scholarship for $1,000 is for a WCC student in Retail, Business and/or Marketing.

The AWC Scholarship for Women in Computing gives $1,500 to pursue a career in computing or a technology related field. You must have at least two semesters of course work remaining.” Ferro said, “Some scholarships [get] as few as three and some as many as 40 [applicants].”

One tip for students applying, “Read all the directions carefully. Have someone look over your application before it is submitted,” said Ferro.

She continued, “Be sure to include all the activities, jobs, responsibilities, etc. that you have while you are in college. Share as much as you are comfortable with when you complete the essays.”
What happens if a student who gets an award cannot attend in the fall?

“We can hold the scholarship as long as the recipient stays in touch with us,” said Ferro.

The scholarship application can be found here. There is an FAQ page on the website for help.
